ProTerra Plug-in Units are a Sustainable Replacement for Traditional Gas Water heaters.

Rheem created an innovative solution to reduce carbon emissions and energy use on a scale like LED lightbulbs, with the groundbreaking solution, ProTerra® Plug-in. The units are Energy Star® certified, compliant with regulations and remove the need/cost to upgrade electrical panels for 240V hardwired service (i.e., minimal to no electrical work).

ProTerra 120V Plug-in makes for an easy gas water heater replacement by eliminating the need for installing hardwired 240V electrical service and panel upgrades. With minimal clearance requirements and ability to fit in a standard tank footprint, the units provide a quick, easy installation for plumbing contractors. For homeowners, EcoNet® Wi-Fi controls allow for convenient operation and monitoring of the unit, including adjusting water temperature and tracking energy usage from the ease of a smart phone. LeakGuard™ Auto Shut-off Valve shuts off the flow of water in the unlikely event a leak is detected, providing users peace of mind.

The development of Rheem’s plug-in heat pump water heater (HPWH) technology began in 2019 with the Roadmap to Decarbonize California’s Buildings, which included plans to replace gas-burning appliances with electric versions (CA Title 20). In many cities, HPWH are the only option for new construction and replacement where gas bans and efficiency requirements eliminate other options.
